From the Oinarisan (Inari-shrine) famous for Senbon-torii ( thousands of gateways to the Shrine) to Uji, a historical city smelling Japanese tea in the air.

In Uji city lying south side of Kyoto, the Ujigawa River flows, over which the Ujibashi Bridge, called as the oldest one in Japan, spans, while “Byodoin” and “Ujigami Shrine” registered as UNESCO World Heritage are located on both banks of its up-stream. Uji city is also famous for producing tea of high quality, and many tea wholesale stores have been standing side by side along Omotesando (the front approach) to Byodoin from ancient times. You can listen to a sound of stone mils for grinding green tea and feel an aroma of tea roasting in the town, which attracts your senses beyond space and time.

Introduction to Spots
Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine
Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is the head of Inari Shrines enshrined all over Japan and keeps focusing people’s worship as the god of bumper crop for more than three hundred years. “Oyama Meguri” is a pilgrimage course of 4 km. to worship at divine sites of Mt. Inari, where you can enjoy walking in the undulating broad precincts. There are about ten thousands of torii-gates on the premises, and especially the famous “Senbon Torii (a thousand of torii-gates)” presents a grand sight.
Ujibasi Dori Shotengai (Ujibashi Bridge Shopping Arcade)
This is the first arcade you step in after getting out of JR Uji Station, showing a mixture of tea wholesaler’s historical buildings and daily stores for local residents.
Byodo-in Omotesando Shotenkai (Byodo-in Temple Front Approach Store Association)
Byodo-in Omotesando, a historical approach to the temple, is ten minutes distance on foot from JR Uji station and very close to Ujibashi Bridge from Keihan Uji station. There is an array of Uji-tea stores of long standing established in Muromachi period along the approach, while an aromatic smell of tea is breathing there around and plenty of specialty products of Uji are sold.
Byodo-in Temple
Yorimichi Fujiwara, the chief adviser to the Emperor, remodeled a villa of his father, Michinaga, into the Byodo-in Temple in 1052. Next year, “Ho-o-do Hall (Phoenix Hall)” was built as an “Amida-do”. Phoenixes are settled on a main roof of the hall and, on the other hand, there are brilliant decollations by means of door pictures in the hall. Double canopies and various Unchu Kuyo Baosatsu (Bodhisattva) are also must-see.
A garden combined with a pond opens in front of Byodoin, which is designated as a historic site and scenic spot and said to represent Buddah’s Gokuraku Jodo (the Western Paradise) by taking Ujigawa River and the range of mountains on the opposite shore of the river in the landscape.
