Two days trip feeling Edo from a spot just next to Tokyo and enjoying beautiful nature created by rivers and rocks.(SAITAMA, Just North of Tokyo)

A tourist course enjoying atmospheres of Kawagoe (town), Chichibu (district) and Nagatoro (river) accessible within an hour or so from the metropolitan area.
While enjoying local sweet potato cakes, strolling around Kawagoe where its townscape reminds Edo tastes such as Kurazukuri (old warehouse building) and Kashiya Yokocho (confectionary streets). Then, staying in a hot spring Ryokan (Japanese-style hotel), a repaired farmer’s residence located in the rich nature of Chichibu, and enjoying dinner around Robata (fireside).
On the second day, visiting to a long-established sake-producer in Chichibu to try sake tasting, and looking on Chichibu Meisen, local silk fabrics as traditional craft products, followed by an experience of a Japanese traditional dyeing method, Katazome (stencil dyeing). After enjoying local vegetable dishes at lunch time, trying a “Nagatoro Rhine cruise” in a unique landscape of pile of rocks, which is filed as a geo-park in Japan. The final enjoyment of the second day is a “Sweets Buffet”.

Warehouse Streets
Enjoy shopping fancy sundries and easy strolling around Edo-reminding streets of tasteful warehouse buildings and local confectionaries. There are many shops selling various Japanese and western sweets including sweet potato cakes of Kagoe’s special product, you can enjoy taking a walk with such cakes. A special pass (bus ticket) is available, which makes it possible to look around Kawagoe town as a whole economically by means of city-circular buses.

Koedo Kurari
Koedo Kurari is repaired warehouses of “Kyu-kagamiyama Shuzo” (former Kagamiyama sake producer) established in 1875 by keeping its image in those days.
“Omiyage-dokoro Meiji-kura) (souvenir shop), one of these warehouses, sells souvenirs such as local sake, cakes, sweet potato sweets and folk handcrafts, while you can enjoy local sake and beer at the bar counter.
“Makanai-dokor Taisho-kura” (restraunt), on the other hand, is a buffet of dishes utilizing local ingredients. Dishes of local ingredients including “Sangen-ton Shabushabu-nabe” utilizing Kawagoe Sngen-ton (improved pork meet) and various kinds of sake produced by Kagamiyama sake producer are enjoyable.

Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine has been a center of Shinto religion as a god of marriage since its establishment before about 1,500 years ago. There are many kinds of marriage charm including a pretty type or tiny one easy to use, which might bring a chance to get not only a lover but a good person, material or work. Recommended shrine goods other than the charm include “Aitaimikuji” (written oracle of love) and “Akaenpitsu” (red pencil), which are similar to Japanese pronunciation to express love.

Miyamoto-ke (Village Headman’s Historic Residence)
Miyamoto-ke in Chichibu district is a reformed historic farmhouse of more than 200 years old and now it is used as a Japanese-style hotel. The owner Mr. Kazuki Miyamoto, having an experience of sumo wrestler is the 12th head of the Miyamoto family.
Recommendation is a guest room with open-door bathe, and an O-kamaburo (big bath directly heated beneath) as well as reserved bathes suitable to enjoy views of each season through the wide window.
You can also enjoy a variety of dishes including Chanko-nabe (stew-like dish traditionally served to sumo wrestlers) using various local ingredients by sitting around Irori (hearth constructed in the floor), while they have about 50 kinds of home-made fruit liquors and serve to visitors in the reformed warehouse as a bar in the garden.
On the second floor of the hotel, they exhibit Heirlooms of the Miyamoto family including Hinaningyo (display dolls for Girls’ Festival) and Kesho-mawashi (sumo wrestler’s ornamental apron) used by the 12th head of the family when he was a wrestler.
In the annex “Furusato-mura”, you can experience a country life in Japan, such as vegetable harvesting and Soba making. You can feel the good old Japan here in the hotel build in a tranquil countryside.

Chichibu Meisen Kan (Chichibu Silk Center)
Chichibu Meisen Kan is an institution for introducing “Chichibu Meisen” as a traditional industry in Chichibu and located in the vicinity of Hitsujiyama Park known as a famous spot of moss phlox. Its main building and factory buildings of saw-tooth roof are designated as National Tangible Cultural Properties which reflect what they used to be in early Showa Period. An experience of hand weaving, indigo dyeing and stencil dyeing are available.

Chichibu Meisen no Haori Taiken (experience program for dressing Chichibu silk)
“Chichibu Meisen” is silk fabrics and was produced in Chichibu district as a silk center since a long time ago and assigned as National Traditional Crafts. As kimonos made of this silk was not only light and comfortably dressed but designed boldly and modernly, they were very popular as stylish garments in Taisho and Showa periods. You can enjoy an experience program to dress such Chichibu Meisen as an antique kimono and to take a walk around the city light-heartedly.
*The experience program is only for group tours at present and individual tourists are not available. Reservation required.

Chichibu Furusato Kan (Chichibu Hometown Hall)
A shop and main a building of prospered silk wholesaler in Taisho period was reformed as a tourist center in an urban area of Chichibu. There are a free resting space and various shops selling local vegetables, fruits, cakes and small articles of Chichibu silk, as well as a café and a hand-made soba shop also serving local dishes. You can enjoy sake in the evening in some shop.

Chichibu Jinja (Shrine)
Chichibu Jinnja is an old leading shrine in Kanto earea having a history of 2,100 years. The main building was donated by Ieyasu Tokugawa in late 16th century and is still keeps an architectural style of early Edo period, which circumference is decorated with brilliantly colored excellent sculptures.
In contrast to “Mizaru, Iwazaru and Kiazaru” (three wise monkeys) of Nikko Tosho-gu, a sculpture of carefully seeing, listing and speaking “Ogennki San-zaru” (vigorous monkeys) is interesting too. “Hokushin’s owl” in the back of the main building is said to have divine favor in studying. “Mayu-mikuji” (oracle written on cocoon) seems to reflect Chichibu prospered by silk and so, it is all the more pretty.

Chichibu Maturi Kaikan (Chichibu Festival Hall)
“Chichibu Yomatsuri” (Chichibu night festival) is a festival of Chichibu shrine and called “big three float festival in Japan” including “Gion Festival” in Kyoto and “Takayama Festival” in Hida. Gorgeous “Yatai” (float) and “Yamaboko” (decorated float) are displayed in the hall. In order to realize, at any time, the atmosphere of the festival held only once a year, the situation is reproduced on the screen by fully utilizing the latest optical and acoustic technology.

Buko-shuzo (Sake Producer)
Buko-shuzo is a sake brewery established in 1753 and was registered as National Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. High-quality sake named “Buko Masamune” is brewed by utilizing water, suitable for sake production from both stand points of quality and quantity, drawn from a good well which is never dry up even under a sever and long draught condition, and also by using specified knowhow of skilled brewers. After a visiting tour to study a sake production process in the factory, you can enjoy tasting and shopping of their sake.

Sake-Zukuri-no-Mori (Sake Cellar)
Local sake named “Chichibu Nishiki” is proud of a history and tradition over 260 years since the foundation in 1749. This sake acquired reputations as a product of refined, mellow and deep taste is produced by using good water from Arakawa River system under a favorable environment of cold weather peculiar to the Chichibu Basin.
“Sake-Zukuri-no-Mori” is a sake cellar for tourist surrounded by beautiful woods with a rich nature and comprises a brewery factory together with a brewing museum and a tourist souvenir shop. Various kinds of tools for brewing the traditional sake “Chichibunishiki”, related documents and scene descriptions of brewery are displayed in the museum.
Sake, shochu (clear liquor) and wine of their products, and selected local specialties of Chichibu are sold in the shop. You can enjoy tasting of their sake, liquor wine at the tasting counter.

Natural Farm City Noen Hotel
A townscape of Chichibu is looked down from the Natural Farm Noen Hotel. They serve so-called Viking-style (all-you-can-eat) cuisines by using secure, safe, and flesh vegetables from their own farm, as well as other local ingredients. Their lunch and dinner menus include more than 30 and 50 dishes of local specialties, medicinal cooking, macrobiotic cooling and the like, respectively.

Chichibu Jiba-san Center (Chichibu Local Products Center)
The Chichibu Jiba-san Center is annexed to Chichibu Station of Chichibu Railway and selling well-known products, local specialties and folk handcrafts of Chichibu. Assortments of these items including flesh homegrown vegetables, various kinds of local sake, well-known local products of Chichibu are about 2,500.

Nagatoro Rain-kudari (Nagatoro Rhine cruise)
Arranging flat rocks spread like Tatami mats is called “Iwa-datami” (piled rocks). You can enjoy such a landscape of strangely- and fantastically-shaped rocks, which are designated as National Treasures and Japanese geo-park, from a traditional Japanese cruising boat. It is also fun to feel the momentarily changing stream and to see a skilled handling of the boatman.

Hanazono Forest (Amusement Park for Sweets)
This is a “theme-park of roses and sweets” directly operated by a Western confectionary manufacturer.
In a quiet residence of a European style, a variety of sweets produced by the manufacturer are waiting for visitors. There lined up are superbly delicious sweets made by pastry chefs, ranging from baumkuchen which received the highest gold prize from a European confectionary competition to Western confectionaries such as thin cookies or chocolates shaped like a tongue called langue de chat and rusks, Japanese sweets and breads. Its buffet-style meal service serves more than 10 types of cakes as well as pasta noodles, pizza, curry rice, salad, breads and other dishes, and guests can eat as much as they like. From 15:00 to 18:00 on weekdays, guest can enjoy its buffet-style sweets service with no time limit.
